Reddit, Forums and the AI Recommendation Engine

Why community discussion feeds AI answers, what the Google and OpenAI Reddit deals changed, and a practitioner's playbook for earning mentions without astroturfing.

Ask an assistant for the best tool, clinic or contractor in a category and, increasingly, the reasoning sounds like a forum thread. That is not a coincidence. Community discussion is some of the most candid, most specific text on the web — and the machines read it.

Why community content matters to AI

Forums contain the exact phrasing of real buyer questions, comparisons between named options, and first-hand experience — the “E” Google added to E-E-A-T. Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit in February 2024 (Google), and OpenAI announced its own in May 2024 (OpenAI).

Your marketing says what you do. The community says whether it worked.

A practitioner's playbook

  1. Find the five threads where your category's recommendations happen. Read them before writing anything.
  2. Answer the question asked, fully, without a link. Mention your business only when it is directly relevant, and disclose it.
  3. Publish the long answer on your site as an article and link to it only when a thread genuinely needs depth.
  4. Handle criticism in public, specifically and calmly. A resolved complaint reads as evidence of trustworthiness.
  5. Feed the questions back into your topic map; every recurring forum question is an article with a guaranteed audience.

What not to do

Astroturfing — fake accounts, paid upvotes, undisclosed self-promotion — violates platform rules and is easy for communities to spot. It produces negative mentions, which teach a model exactly the wrong association.
