Answer-First Writing: The Inverted Pyramid for Machines
Put the answer in sentence one under a question-shaped heading. The four rules that make a paragraph quotable by snippets, voice and AI assistants — with an interactive before/after.
Journalists learned a century ago to put the most important fact first, because editors cut stories from the bottom. Answer engines cut from everywhere. The inverted pyramid is back — at the paragraph level.
What is answer-first writing?
Answer-first writing is a structure in which every section opens with a sentence that fully answers the section's question, naming the subject explicitly, before any context, caveat or story. The rest of the section earns trust; the first sentence earns the quote.
Where does the answer start?
When it comes to choosing the right approach for your business, there are many factors to consider. Every situation is unique, and what works for one company may not work for another. That said, in our experience, most small businesses find that a structured approach to search pays off over time, typically within six to twelve months.
The answer begins at word 54 of 57.
The four rules
- Heading as question. Use the words buyers type or say.
- Answer in sentence one, 20–40 words, with the subject named rather than “it” or “this.”
- Specifics over hedges. Numbers, ranges, names, places. “Six to twelve months” is quotable; “it depends” is not.
- One idea per paragraph, so a retrieval chunk never carries half of two answers.
Write every paragraph as if it will be read alone — because it will be.
Where it goes wrong
- Answer-first is not answer-only. A page that is all summary has nothing to cite but itself.
- Do not stuff headings with keywords; phrase them as people speak.
- Do not fake precision. A specific number you cannot source is worse than a range you can.
Apply it to a site, not a page
