How Long Does SEO Take for a Small Business?

First movement in weeks, real results in three to six months, competitive terms in a year. A realistic timeline, what speeds it up, what slows it down, and where AI search fits.

Short answer: for a local small business, the first movement usually shows within a few weeks of a well-built site being indexed, meaningful results typically take three to six months, and competitive terms can take a year. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling ads or luck.

A realistic timeline

  • Weeks 1–4: Google crawls and indexes the new pages. Your brand name and very specific searches start to show up. Your Google Business Profile changes can help map-pack visibility within weeks.
  • Months 2–3: service-and-city searches with little competition begin to rank. Search Console shows impressions climbing before clicks do.
  • Months 3–6: steady leads from the terms that matter, if the site is strong and reviews keep coming.
  • 6–12 months: the competitive head terms — "roofer Boca Raton" — where established competitors have years of links and reviews.

What makes it faster

  • A technically clean, fast site that Google can crawl without friction.
  • One page per service and area, each answering real customer questions.
  • A complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of recent reviews.
  • Consistent business details across directories.
  • A few relevant local links — chambers, partners, suppliers, local press.

What makes it slower

  • Thin or copied content, or one page trying to rank for everything.
  • Changing domains without redirects, which throws away what you had earned.
  • A crowded market where competitors have a long head start.
  • Starting, stopping and redesigning every few months.

And AI search?

AI assistants that search the web — ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — tend to cite pages that already rank and answer clearly, so they follow roughly the same timeline. What a model learned in training changes more slowly and is outside anyone's direct control; consistent, quotable facts across the web are the best lever.

The part you can control today

The clock starts when a site worth ranking goes live. That is why the $2,500 build is 14 days, not three months: the sooner the foundation is in place, the sooner the compounding starts.
