What to Put on Your Homepage So Google and AI Understand You

Nine things a small business homepage needs so search engines and AI assistants can say what you do, where, and why you — and a five-second test to check yours.

Short answer: your homepage has one job for search engines and AI — say, in plain words near the top, what you do, where you do it, who it's for and why you're the one to call. Then back it up with proof, link to a page for each service, and state the same facts in structured data.

1. A headline that names the service and the place

"Roof repair and replacement in Boca Raton" tells Google, ChatGPT and a skimming customer exactly where they landed. "Excellence since 1998" tells them nothing.

2. One sentence that answers "why you?"

Right under the headline: the specific reason to choose you — licensed, same-day quotes, family-owned, 4.9 stars from 300 reviews. Specific facts are what AI assistants quote.

3. One clear action

Call, book or request a quote — pick one and repeat it. A homepage with six competing buttons converts worse than one with a single obvious next step.

4. Links to a page for every service

The homepage introduces; the service pages rank. Each core service deserves its own page, and the homepage should link to all of them with descriptive text, not "learn more".

5. Proof

Reviews, photos of real work, logos of clients or certifications, years in business. Proof is what turns "a roofer" into "the roofer" for customers and for AI.

6. Your service area, in words

List the cities and neighbourhoods you cover as text on the page. A map image alone can't be read by search engines.

7. A short FAQ

Four to six questions customers really ask — price ranges, timelines, insurance, areas — each answered in two sentences. This is the content answer engines lift most often.

8. Contact details that match everywhere

Business name, phone and address in the footer, identical to your Google Business Profile. Consistency is how search engines confirm you're one real business.

9. Structured data behind it all

LocalBusiness, Service, Review and FAQ schema restate everything above in a language machines read without guessing. It's invisible to visitors and one of the strongest signals you can send.

A quick test

Show your homepage to a stranger for five seconds, then ask what you do and where. If they can't answer, neither can Google — and neither can ChatGPT. The homepage you're reading this from is built on the same checklist; the $2,500 build puts it on yours. Terms are explained in the glossary.
