AI Search: From Retrieval to Recommendation
The web is becoming both an answer supply chain and a decision surface. What changes for query intent, extractable evidence, citations, and the click that remains.
A search used to be a request for doors. “Show me the pages.” An AI answer is a request for judgment. “Read the pages, resolve the differences, and tell me what matters.” The web still supplies the material, but the visitor may never inspect the original room.
That shift creates two editorial jobs. Make your evidence understandable when a machine retrieves it. Then make the original page valuable enough that a person has a reason to visit. A site optimized for only one of those jobs is incomplete.
A query is a job, not just a keyword
“Best hiking boots” and “which boots work for wet limestone if I have a wide forefoot?” ask different jobs of a search system. The second contains constraints that invite synthesis. A useful publisher organizes evidence around those constraints rather than repeating the category name more often.
Informational questions need explanations. Comparison questions need criteria and trade-offs. Transactional questions need current availability, prices, and policies. A passage that is helpful for one intent can be a poor source for another. This is why building a pile of loosely related articles is not the same as building an answer-ready knowledge base.
Google’s guidance on AI features says the existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant and that no special optimization is required for eligibility. There is no magic “AI schema” switch. Search eligibility and useful, supported content remain the foundation.
The evidence behind the interface shift
In its July 22, 2025 analysis, Pew Research Center found traditional-result clicks on 8% of results-page visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. Summary links themselves were clicked on about 1% of visits to pages containing a summary.
Those are observational browsing results, not a controlled experiment assigning the same query to two interfaces. Query mix and user intent may differ. Carry the finding with that limitation. It is evidence that the interface and click behavior are associated, not a universal traffic-reduction coefficient.

Retrieval changes the unit of writing
A traditional page can depend on its surrounding context. A retrieved passage often cannot. Pronouns, unexplained comparisons, and unsourced superlatives become especially fragile when a paragraph travels away from its heading, author bio, and preceding section.
The answer is not robotic keyword repetition. It is self-contained evidence: name the subject, state the claim, define the scope, and attach the source or method. Separate observed results from predictions. Put the important limit next to the number instead of hiding it three screens later.
Our answer-first writing guide explains the structure. The next step is evidence-first editing: a concise sentence should still be honest when lifted out of the page. Readability and machine extractability should reinforce each other, not compete.

Recommendation needs more than retrieval
A system can find your page and still avoid recommending your organization. Perhaps its identity is unclear, its facts conflict with other sources, or its claims are too broad to support the requested decision. Retrieval makes a document available; recommendation requires a judgment about whether it belongs in the answer.
This is where entity clarity, consistent naming, canonical definitions, and corroboration matter as information practices. They reduce confusion. They do not guarantee a favorable answer. Likewise, structured data can describe the page and its relationships, but cannot manufacture authority the underlying evidence lacks.
Make the fact easy to quote. Make the page worth leaving the answer for.
The click that remains has to earn its existence
If a summary already answered the basic definition, the original page needs something else: a calculator with visible assumptions, a comparison with adjustable criteria, a reproducible method, a full source trail, or an explanation of exceptions. These are not tricks to withhold the answer. They are reasons the deeper experience matters.
An interactive tool can help a reader apply a concept to their own context. But a decorative chart with invented precision merely adds another misleading claim. Label simulations, disclose assumptions, and keep the basic answer in readable HTML. Do not make the facts inaccessible unless someone drags a control.
A measurement stack that respects uncertainty
Track search impressions and clicks by topic and intent. Add repeated AI-answer sampling with a fixed prompt set, model or assistant, date, and sample count. Record mentions, citations, and factual errors separately. A brand mention is not necessarily endorsement; a citation is not necessarily a correct interpretation.
Then connect those observations to outcomes cautiously: direct visits, branded searches, newsletter subscriptions, and self-reported discovery can help. They are not clean proof of an unseen AI exposure. Our AI visibility measurement essay explains why a single answer is not a ranking.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect traffic?
Distinguish training crawlers from search and user-initiated fetchers. OpenAI documents separate roles in its crawler guidance. The right policy depends on your publishing model and rights strategy; blindly treating all agents as the same can undermine discovery.
Will adding entity pages make AI cite us?
No guarantee. Entity pages can clarify concepts and relationships when they contain useful, consistent information. Empty definitions, circular citations, or mass-generated hubs do not create evidence. Use the graph to organize knowledge, not to simulate reputation.
The durable publishing strategy
Build a site that can serve both the answer and the investigation. Explain the concept plainly, link the entity that owns its definition, cite the material that supports the claim, and offer a deeper experience the summary cannot substitute for.
That connects site architecture to editorial operations. It also introduces the next problem: when synthetic material becomes plentiful, how do we tell where an asset came from? The answer begins with provenance, not a truth badge.
